First match (1/1)

[A/N: I'm sorry for the delayed update, I wanted to update yesterday but then MAMA happened so yeah]  Jimin sat on the bench in the changing room with a thud. They decided to wear white shirts, considering Jimin, Jungkook and Taehyung have not gotten their jersey yet and Namjoon was begging for a new one because their current ones are ‘dull as your face’ as he had shouted to the female junior who designed them. The girl ended up running away and sobbing behind the chemistry lab. It’s not like Namjoon cares anyway, he never did and probably never will.Jimin places a hand over his chest, feeling his unsteady heartbeat. Hoseok told him that the Dragons are not that much of a threat compared to the team, and Jin had tirelessly continue to tell him that he’s good enough to beat them but Jimin was still nervous. This is his first game after being a part in a legendary team, and, he ought to feel the burden and strain coursing through his vein. He’s been put in a game for countless of time already, having starting to play basketball when he’s only eleven, but this is a different league, not the ones he had back in Busan. What if he messes up and the team ended up losing? What if the Dragons exceeded his expectations? It’s okay, Jimin thought. They might not even put me in the game and have me benched for the whole quarter, he tried to convince himself.Jungkook has the energy of a 6 years old toddler high on sugar; that kid never really got tired during training and somehow always have the spare energy to jump around and bug everybody else to treat him for a meal or something. These days Taehyung seemed to give in to him most of the time.Jin possibly had the least stamina out of all of them but Hoseok could easily substitute him and Jin could jump back into the game right after drinking some Gatorade. So maybe, maybe Jimin has the chance of not playing at all. He wouldn’t have to pick up the risk of bringing the whole team down and-“Dubu to Jimin, hello,” Taehyung crouched in front of Jimin, snapping his fingers in front of the seemingly too-deep-in-his-thoughts boy. Jimin shook his head looked down at Taehyung.“Yeah? You were saying anything?” he asked. Taehyung was wearing a head band that pushes his bangs to the back and away from interrupting his field of view, and Jimin thought he looked really good with it.“I said do you want a good luck kiss from me ‘cause a good luck kiss from the mighty Kim Taehyung makes you an awesome player and I already gave one to Jin hyung and Hoseok hyung so-““Taehyung I would love to puke all over you right now,” Jimin nonchalantly cut the other off from spewing more rainbow nonsense.“Aww Jimin c’mon you know you need the kiss me,” Taehyung whined. Namjoon walked over behind him and whacked his head with a resonating smack.“Oww hyung what the hell?!” Taehyung cried, hand shooting up to rub the sore spot. Namjoon scoffed at him before casually walking away from the pair. Taehyung looked at Jimin, sticking his bottom lip out and eyebrows scrunched together in what Jimin reckoned to be one of Taehyung’s attempt to gain sympathy by making his cute pouting.“Taehyung, no,” Jimin said before the other could utter anymore word on ‘kiss’. Taehyung blew air from his nose and stood to find his next target. He spotted Jungkook by the end of the room, taking deep breaths to regulate his breathing for the coming game.“Jungkook-““Fuck no don’t come to me!” Jungkook immediately seek shelter from Yoongi who was discussing some final preparations with Jin and Hoseok before they step into the game. Jin looked like he wanted to give Jungkook a scolding on ‘language’ but cancelled his intention upon seeing Taehyung creeping. It was a nice Wedneday afternoon, and the match with the Dragons was ultimately held in Seoul Bang’s Academy gym where rumours and news spread fast so the gym was filled with fangirls and students half an hour before the game even started.Yoongi rolled up his sleeves and called for the team to gather before they walk into the gym.“Alright guys, let’s ace the warm up game for the season,” Yoongi looked at each and every one of his boys. They nodded in return, dispersing to grab their stuffs before going out and into the gym.Jimin was shocked by the loud shrieking and squealing as soon as they entered the gym and immediately felt the nervousness from before rapidly consuming him again. Jimin looked up and saw that the bleachers were almost fully occupied and felt his throat going dry.“Yoongi oppa!” They screamed. Yoongi acted like they didn’t exist.“Namjoon oppa!”“Jin oppa!”And the chants continued.“Hoseok oppa!” Hoseok was the only one who actually cared to turn around to the fangirls and waved at them enthusiastically, returning all the literal loves he received.Jimin was going to screw up. Silently he cursed the venue for the game. All the shouts and screams just seemed to put on a lot more burden on him rather than actually giving him more strength like the effect it should have on the team. Taehyung seemed to be back into his cocky attitude and gave no care about the noise while Jungkook seemed pleased with it although not the Hoseok kind of pleased but still somewhat enjoying the attention.Jimin heaved a breath of relief when Yoongi said that the starting line-up would consist of Yoongi himself, Hoseok, Namjoon, Jungkook and Taehyung. He was starting to get his hopes up high on the idea of not getting thrown into the court at all, until Yoongi finished his command.“-and Jimin, I want you to observe, figure them out and I’ll get you in the moment Taehyung starts to get depleted.”Jimin nodded slowly, feeling the burden of trust shoved right into his arms. The referee called for the teams to line up to shake hands before the game starts. They did, with Jimin bowing 90 degree to every one of the Dragons members and Hoseok smiling and mouthing a small good luck. Yoongi casually shook their hands, holding no interest in making an effort to look like something he isn’t –which is being nice- but glanced over for a bit longer at their captain, Pyo Gookmin. The other gave Yoongi a smile that made him fidget. Yoongi stared back, trying to brush off the uneasy feeling. There’s no way they are going to lose, Yoongi promises himself that.He called the team for a quick ‘Bangtan! Bangtan! Bbangbbangtan!’ cheer before Jimin and Jin runs off to the bench. He heard the crowd cheering and knew that they have to win this.Yoongi and Namjoon took their position as forwards, Jungkook running off to the center circle for the jump ball, Taehyung going to the front court as shooting guard and Hoseok following closely as point guard.Jin unconsciously pouted in concentration as he tries to predict in which direction are the Dragons planning to go, based on their positions. Bae Jewook took up the center, seemingly to be the tallest in their team, Yoo Heedo slightly behind him as a forward, Lee Gunmin on the other side of Jewook, and Gookmin with Im Junghoon on guards. Their reserved players on the bench all looked like inexperienced sophomores that Jin was almost sure they would only be put in into the game as fillers. The referee looked around to make sure everybody was ready and the crowd chanted, “Jeon Jungkook! Jeon Jungkook!” so loud that Jimin would actually pity the other team for the pressure if it’s not for the fact that he was feeling very nervous right now. After the referee threw the ball in the air, the clock started ticking when Jewook tapped the ball in Gunmin’s direction. Jungkook cursed as he instantly started running after landing from the jump. Yoongi swiftly moved to mark Gunmin –fuck the height difference- but was a tad too late when Gunmin made a quick fade away in the hoop’s direction. There’s no way the ball is going in, Namjoon thought as he readied himself for a rebound, but he was immediately caught off guard as Heedo jumped in front of him, higher than Namjoon could before catching the ball for the Dragon’s rebound.20 seconds into the game, the Dragons started the score count.Yoongi jogged past the raging Namjoon and promptly patted his back.“Chill, we’ll zoom past them in no time,” the captain whispered. Namjoon grunted and pushed his hair backwards before running to the back court. Taehyung was outside the line for inbound throw, making quick rational decision. He saw Hoseok in an open space and took the chance by throwing the ball, fast and hard at the older.Jewook rushed to intercept and steal, but Hoseok already predicted the move so he ran forward and merely pushed the ball back in Taehyung’s direction. The younger took the hint and caught the ball, dribbled past through Gookmin and Junghoon with the help from Hoseok and Namjoon before deciding that he wasn’t stable enough to make the shoot so he made a swift turn of the wrists and passed the ball to Yoongi who easily scored a lay-up.He wiped off the layer of sweat on his forehead with the back of his palm before retreating back to the front court for defense mode. Jimin watched silently with Jin beside him. It’s the seventh minute of the first quarter and they were leading with 24-21 but the game was tough, even in Jin’s eyes. The Dragons has certainly leveled up a lot compared to last year; their play is more structured and the new addition Yoo Heedo definitely boosted up their performance. Yoongi panted hard, eyeing his teammates. Taehyung hasn’t shown any sign of draining, and Jimin’s focused face implied that he’s not done observing yet. Gookmin rushed by past Yoongi and he swore he saw a smirk playing on the other’s lips.Stay cool, Yoongi tells himself. Even though his opponents sort of got him taken aback by their drastic improvement, this match is nothing like the worse he’s been through in the past. He dashed through the half court and heard the crowd going, “Min Yoongi! Min Yoongi! Min Yoongi!”“Hyung!” Hoseok called out and Yoongi immediately went under the post for a rebound. Jimin knew the main point in the Dragon’s play. Heedo’s high jump and extremely accurate rebound was what keeping them scoring easy points. Any of the players from the team could release the ball from any range, so long as Heedo was ready in the correct stance for the rebound. The strength in his legs made the height of his jump almost unreachable for other players to steal the ball from him.“Jimin,” Jin called. Jimin took his eyes off the game and gave his attention towards his hyung.“Do you think you can jump that high?” Jin asked him. Jimin paused for a while. He knows his ability; he is quite light but the muscles in his calf are very well developed, giving him the power to jump to a considerable height. Then he looked back at the court and put his focus on Heedo and took in the other’s height into attention.Heedo was obviously taller than Jimin, and though Jimin could somehow reach the height of his jump, he would need a little push.“I don’t know, hyung. I think I’m short by some inches,” Jimin shouted, trying to fight the roar when Taehyung shoot a clean three-pointer. “Let’s deploy the double play we discussed before. The Dragons do depend on Heedo and Gookmin. It’s either they fake a three pointer and let Heedo score the rebound or Gookmin’s fast break for his three pointer,” Jin said while handing out towels to Namjoon and Taehyung. They’re on the two minutes break before the second quarter starts. Hoseok was breathing hard, face red from the game and bangs damp from sweat. The rest weren’t much better, save for Taehyung with his head band.“Sunbae I-I think I can replace Taehyung now,” Jimin suggested. If he’s really going to try and block Heedo’s shots, he better start early so that he can catch his momentum and reach his maximum performance. They were leading by four points, but their opponents are rapidly catching up.Yoongi wanted to tell his team to relax, that this was just a friendly game and not a big deal but he knew he’d be lying to them and himself because the Bulletproof never loses to Dragons, and they’re not about to start now, not under my lead.He looked at Jimin and gave him a quick nod.“Also, I think Namjoon should put a stronger oppression against Jewook, he’s a main key to Gookmin’s fast breaks,” Hoseok pointed out. They all nodded in agreement. Jimin flexed his shoulder before jumping his way into the court. He needed his muscles to be good for his tries, and for a moment he was scared that he would end up making things worse but Taehyung walked past him and slapped his chest, raising a thumbs-up without even looking at him. Then Yoongi came and curved his lips to give a smile of confidence at him, and then Jimin heard it, “Park Jimin! Park Jimin! Park Jimin!”Jimin cracked his neck as Hoseok threw the inbound ball. Jimin has no option of failing now. ---Hello guys!
