Summary:

"It has been six months since weve started these sessions, and I feel like weve gotten nowhere in this time," The woman sighed, glancing across the room at the girl sitting silently on the couch. She averted her gaze back down at the clipboard on her lap. Usually these things would be filled with scattered yet neat notes all organized by sessions. Instead this one was empty, the sheet white and lifeless. Aside from the patients name at the top it was blank. Even after these long  months, nothing had changed."Taeyeon, are you listening to me?" The psychologists voice came out like honey, soothing yet still had a tone of underlying impatience.Of course Taeyeon was listening, how could she not? She had hoped if she stayed quiet for every therapy session the woman would give up, but instead she just got more persistent. She didn’t need any help, if her friend hadn’t been so worried she wouldn’t even be here. No one needed to know about her life, especially some psychologist who could probably care less. The room was so silent now, and if she closed her eyes it was easy to imagine herself somewhere else. Instead she was stuck in this office that was meant to be welcoming but had her wanting to run out the door. The clock ticked loudly up on the dull colored wall beside her. Every click of the mechanics felt like hours, and she felt uncomfortable on the stiff leather couch that she sat on every week. She thought that maybe she would have been used to it by now but that was not the case.Even though the air conditioning was running strongly she still felt hot in her own skin. She hated how this woman would just stare at her the entire time. Sometimes looking at the clipboard, or at her watch, but her eyes never left Taeyeon for long. Did she think if she stared long enough Taeyeon would say something? She had to know by now it wasn’t working, why couldn’t she just give up? These long hour sessions every single week for the past sixth months had done nothing. It was a waste of time.“I only want to help you. Your friend was worried, she wants to help you as much as I do,” The voice drifted across the room breaking the uncomfortable silence.Taeyeon finally looked up making eye contact with the doctor for the first time today. Her eyes were guarded and she tried to send the woman a signal. If she was smart she’d understand to just give up.The psychologist sighed. A long drawn out breath that seemed to encase all of her frustration and impatience. Even a trained professional had their breaking point.“I see we’re not getting anywhere. I’ve tried Taeyeon, I really have and I hope you understand that,” she said slowly, setting down her clipboard and leaning back in her seat. It looked like she had finally raised the white flag.Taeyeon almost smiled, it was finally over. She was going to be free from coming back to this place, this confining building full of people with their own problems. Maybe now her friend would give up and realize she was fine, she didn’t need any help…from anyone.“Don’t worry Ms. Kim, we’re not giving up on you,” she said leaning forward and grinning. “Instead I’ll be assigning a new psychologist to you. She’s new, just out of college and I think she’s ready for her first patient. She’s also your age so maybe you’ll be able to connect to her more easily.”Taeyeon’s eyes widened slightly and she wanted to curse. Why couldn’t they just give up? Nothing would change with this new doctor. She would stay silent, and soon enough they would give up as well. What would happen then? Would they keep assigning her to new people every six months, in some sort of unending cycle of disappointment? This wasn’t going to end well.“Okay so I guess this is the end of your time with me. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you Taeyeon,” the woman stood up and extended her hand. After getting nothing but a cold stare in response she took it back with a smirk. “Alright I get the hint. We’ll need you to come in next Monday at 8:00am. Your new psychologist will be in room 801.”Taeyeon wanted to protest, she wanted to scream and just tell everyone to leave her alone. Instead she stood up quietly and sighed. She took one last look around the room glad she wouldn’t have to come back to this one. She knew the new office would be exactly the same, dull and stifling but maybe it would be different. She had to tell herself that. She glanced at the doctor wanting to say sorry for wasting her time, but instead she turned and quickly left the room without another look back.---It was chilly this morning, spring was finally ending and summer was on the horizon leaving mornings cool and afternoons warm. It was her favorite season and she dreaded the heat that was to come soon. Mornings like this she could just let her mind wander and almost forget the nightmares from the night before. Almost. She pulled into the small parking lot of the psychiatric building. Which she liked to think of more as a prison than a place to get help.  As she turned off her car she thought of just turning it back on and leaving. Maybe they’d finally give up on her then.  But then she’d never hear the end of it from her friend, who was one of the most stubborn people she had ever met. Taeyeon would rather sit in the confining office for an hour than hear a lecture from Sooyoung. She took a deep breath and made her way into the building. A sweet-voiced receptionist sat at a large desk, a smile already plastered on her face. “Taeyeon! Nice day isn’t it?” she said in a happy tone.Like always Taeyeon just smiled softly and made her way towards the elevators. Up three floors, and a short walk down the hall had her in front of large wooden double doors with shiny golden numbers “801”. The plaque that would usually hold the current psychologists name was blank, most likely since she was new. Not like it mattered either way, she would never need to greet her.She settled herself with another deep breath and pushed open the door. Instead of the usual drab walls and boring uncomfortable furniture her eyes were met with something completely different. The walls were clean and bright, lined with colorful paintings and wall hangings. A large light blue couch was set to the side of the room, with a soft pink colored chair set a few feet away. On the far end of the room was a beautiful cherry wood desk, scattered with papers, colorful pens and pencils, a laptop, and other odds and ends. Before she could take in anything else another door to the side opened and she wasn’t alone anymore. The woman that walked into the room was totally different than she had expected. Sure she knew she was young, her age. But she had expected the usual professional attire, and trained expressions. Instead her eyes were met with someone who literally beamed with energy. Her long silky raven colored hair, bright clothes, hot pink heels, and blinding eye smile totally took Taeyeon off guard. This wasn’t what she had expected. Not at all.“You must be Kim Taeyeon!” She said louder than was needed to be heard , her smile wide and kind. She set her coffee down on the desk and quickly made her way over. She seemed excited to finally have her own patient, own office, and finally recognized as a professional. Taeyeon tried not to smile, she didn’t want to give this girl hope and she wished she didn’t have to be her first patient. She was going to be disappointed in the end.“Hi, I’m Dr. Hwang, but you can call me Tiffany!” She said brightly, extending her hand out with warm eyes. She didn’t even look like she had been trained in this field. She didn’t have that professional air about her like the others did.Against her usual actions Taeyeon extended her hand and placed it into hers. It was totally unlike how she had acted towards the last doctor and she had no idea why. Tiffany’s skin was warm just like her gaze and after a quick shake she took her hand back. It felt like her guard was already breaking down and she didn’t want that. She didn’t want to be here at all.“Please take a seat,” Tiffany said waving her hand towards the comfortable looking couch.Taeyeon nodded and sat down. It was like she melted into the soft cushions, unlike the firm leather couch that her former doctor had. She already felt totally at ease sitting here…and maybe that was the whole point of this couch. She tried to snap herself out of it and sat up straighter.Tiffany smiled, grabbing her clipboard off the desk and sat down slipping on sleek looking black framed glasses. She glanced at the chart and then set her gaze on Taeyeon. “So Taeyeon, are you ready to get started with our first session?”Taeyeon looked up, and almost had the urge to speak. Instead she just stared hoping that maybe Tiffany would get the hint, unlike the others.Instead she was met with another blinding eye smile, “Great, let’s get started!”This was going to be a long hour.
